Lovers of traditional fare like hearty home-made pies and classic Sunday roasts piled onto a board made for sharing can have their fill of some fantastic food at The One Elm in Stratford this season, and banish the winter blues for good.
The popular town gastropub has cranked up the temperature in the kitchen by baking a selection of scrumptious savoury and sweet pies to snuggle up to midweek, alongside a spectacular sharing roast for two that brings a real wow factor to the table on Sundays.
Every Wednesday night is now Pie Night at the pub, and head chef Andy Lock and his team will be celebrating one of the nation's favourite dishes by devoting an entire specials board to pies. Every week there will be a choice of four savoury and one sweet pie to tuck into, served with seasonal greens and lashings of gravy, or in the case of sweet, custard, cream or ice cream.
"Most people like a pie in some shape or form, whether pie and mash; pie, chips and gravy or warm apple pie with a big dollop of cream," says head chef Andy Lock. "It's one of the most British things you can think of. So we've decided to celebrate this great British tradition every week and put a fresh selection of great pies on for everyone to enjoy, every Wednesday night, whether with a pint or a glass or two of red.
"Think classic steak and ale pie made with caramelised beef and a dark rich gravy laced with stout, or a satisfying shepherds pie packed with minced lamb and sweet tomatoes topped with cheesy mash. Or try something different like our chicken balti pie filled with chicken simmered in coconut milk subtly spiced with cumin, fennel, cloves and fenugreek. Just be sure to leave room afterwards for a delectable pear and blackberry pie with creamy custard," he says.
Sundays at The One Elm are a highlight of the week with new sharing roasts creating a real talking point. Tuck into a whole chicken, roasted to perfection and carved ready to enjoy with cracking roasties, towering Yorkshires and bottomless jugs of gravy. Each comes complete with sides like cauliflower cheese and stuffing, as well as greens, root vegetables and carrot and swede purée, and is great value at £30 for two. The pub has thought of everything and has one of the team on hand to bring you extra roasties and Yorkshires, before you even have to ask.
"Our roasts have always been popular and now they're even better than ever with great joints of meat, generous helpings of seasonal veg and all the trimmings," continues Andy.
"We'll be serving up different roasts to share over the coming weeks - look out for pork shoulder with roasted belly pork and roasted rump of beef with slow braised beef cheeks teamed with sides like warming braised red cabbage. Throw in the papers and a decent bottle of wine and you've got it sorted. It's what Sundays are made for," he says.
