Shakespeare's England offers a warm welcome to ALL!
28th February 2017
Shakespeare’s England boasts a wealth of visitor attractions, many of which are accessible for people with disabilities or impairments of any kind. And in view of the forthcoming Disabled Access Day 10th-12th March, we thought it might be useful to highlight a few in and around Stratford-upon-Avon…
Despite popular belief, accessibility doesn’t just mean the more obvious things, like ramps for buggies, wheelchair users and mobility scooters. Many people have hidden disabilities, so it also means providing facilities for everyone, including people with a sight or hearing impairment, dementia, autism, and so on.
Some examples of good practice are:
- chairs for customers to save them standing
- hearing loops in a reception area or meeting room
- lower level ticket or reception desks
- public telephones with larger buttons
- menus with large print
- accessible websites that comply with BS8878
- general documents in a large print option
- signs with braille
You’ll be pleased to know that many of the wonderful hotels in Stratford offer accessible bedrooms and public areas, including Premier Inn , Travelodge, The Arden Hotel, Falcon Hotel, Crowne Plaza, Stratford Manor Hotel and The Welcombe Hotel.
In terms of tourist attractions within the town, all the properties belonging to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust have made adjustments for people with additional needs, including Shakespeare’s Birthplace, as does Stratford Town Walk.
Did you know disabled visitors can enjoy free entry to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Properties, on the weekend of 10th - 12th March 2017?
The Royal Shakespeare Company is especially inclusive with level access to both theatres from Waterside, lifts to all floors, accessible toilets, widespread induction loops, captioned and audio-described performances, and touch tours for all productions.
